I know it’s not exactly cutting-edge to whine about the NHS, but I went for my first dental appointment since living in England (eight months on the waiting list, my coworkers were shocked when they learned I got in so quickly).

“You have beautiful teeth, there are no problems,” the dentist said. Keep in mind that I haven’t been to a dentist in about a year and a half. I take good care of my teeth, but plaque buildup afflicts the most OCD of brushers, no?

“Aren’t you going to clean my teeth?” I asked. Nope. To do that, you have to contact a private hygienist, who will charge approx. £70 ($140) for an initial check-up, than an additional £25 for the cleaning.

They charged me £15, just for the dentist to look in my mouth for thirty seconds and give me a thumbs up. If you come in with a horrendous problem, they will treat you, but they charge something like £40 for a cavity.

Free health care is an illusion. Eat me, Michael Moore.

I truly love photos that are meant to appear casual and unplanned, but where the individual elements are so unrealistically and illogically placed it’s obviously just someone trying to demonstrate every facet of their awesome lifestyle. They often involve lit candles, pretentious hardbacks, sophisticated alcohol, and acoustic guitars.

Are the editorial staff of the New Yorker so tone-deaf to the political realities in this country that they don’t understand how their self-indulgent “satire” will be put to use? By reducing the argument, as they do in their response to criticism, to purely literary and aesthetic considerations, they prove themselves to be asinine beyond belief. As others besides myself have pointed out, this idiocy hands the yahoos a weapon they themselves would not have had the wit to hone.
